    Greek island of Santorini
Santorini, also known as Thira, is a volcanic Greek island in the Aegean Sea, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of the Greek mainland. It is the largest island of a small circular archipelago, which bears the same name and is the remnant of a caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 square kilometers (28 square miles) and a 2011 census population of 15,550.
The island was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its two principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.

Santorini is a popular tourist destination, known for its beaches, its sunsets, and its whitewashed villages. The island is also home to a number of wineries, which produce some of the best wines in Greece.

Here are some of the things you can do on a trip to Santorini:

Visit the caldera: The caldera is the most iconic feature of Santorini, and it's definitely worth taking some time to explore. You can hike down to the caldera floor, take a boat trip around it, or simply admire the views from the clifftops.
Visit Fira and Oia: Fira and Oia are the two most popular towns on Santorini, and they're both worth a visit. Fira is the capital of Santorini, and it's a bustling town with a lot to see and do. Oia is a more laid-back town, and it's famous for its whitewashed houses and its stunning views of the caldera.
Visit the beaches: Santorini has a number of beautiful beaches, including Red Beach, Black Beach, and White Beach. These beaches are all made up of volcanic sand, and they're a great place to relax and soak up the sun.
Go wine tasting: Santorini is home to a number of wineries, and it's a great place to go wine tasting. The island produces some of the best wines in Greece, and you can sample a variety of wines at the wineries.
Hike to the top of Profitis Ilias: Profitis Ilias is the highest point on Santorini, and it's a great place to hike. The hike to the top is about 45 minutes, and it offers stunning views of the island.
Santorini is a beautiful island with a lot to offer visitors. Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure-filled trip, Santorini is the perfect place for you.
