E&J SPOTLIGHTS: TYLER GIVENS

Meet the Grand Prize winner of the E&J x Karl Kani Mentorship Program and founder of Menace Denim—you’re gonna be seeing a lot more of her.

May 21, 2021

Failure is not an option.

This advice from the Godfather of Streetwear, Karl Kani, is the same motivator that drives Tyler Givens. The self-proclaimed Menace, Muse, and Maker behind Menace Denim, this 22-year-old graduate from the Kent State Fashion Program didn’t let age or a global pandemic stop her from launching her streetwear brand.

It’s this passion that helped Tyler get selected as the Grand Prize winner of the E&J x Karl Kani Mentorship program, where she’ll win a year of mentorship from the legendary Karl Kani himself.

“Menace Denim was launched May of 2019 to inspire customers and create custom garments for those who love unique, edgy denim...I’m committed to enhancing the confidence and style of every customer one design and one product at a time, and encouraging everyone to #TakeTheRisk!”

“Our motto is: ‘originality & confidence so strong it’s threatening’ because those are the ideal traits of the MD customer. You cannot rock Menace Denim and be fearful of stares because all eyes will be on you...just own it.”

“I’ve been distressing denim since I was 12 years old because I was inspired by TLC’s oversized, baggy distressed style. My style has always been default streetwear so I can be more sexy, edgy & comfortable.”

“The main obstacles I’ve had to overcome definitely include being a new brand in the midst of the global pandemic, but because of this I’ve learned everything I want to provide for my future team and employees as I expand...As an entrepreneur it can be easy to be an over thinker or my own biggest critic, so every day I aim to strengthen mind control over everything I’m faced with.”

“With this Karl Kani Mentorship, I’m truly looking to learn everything needed to achieve longevity within our industry. Too often urban street brands are labeled lame or out of style instead of being respected for setting trends and breaking ground in an industry that often steals from our Black community, so to see Karl Kani still thriving in 2021 is so inspiring and lets me know it’s possible.”
